I had this cranky old neighbor when I was a kid. He was probably the scariest guy on the block, and the kids were all afraid to talk to him. One day, he just disappeared for a while. Some of the kids were joking that maybe he died in his sleep, but that stopped as soon as somebody suggested that now his ghost was going to haunt us. What really happened was that he had a really bad case of hemmoroids, and he had to call his daughter in law to come and take him to the doctor. He was in the hospital for a week after having that hemmoroid surgery. He didn’t seem to be a cranky old man afterwards, so I guess all in all it was a win win for everybody.
